State of the Game, 2015

Mid-December here officially marks the two-year anniversary of this blog, and roughly the two-and-a-half year anniversary of this game. Our characters and the plot have certainly come a long way (remember Elysium? Yeah, that was a thing that used to happen in this city) but I can’t help but reflect on how this overall game writeup has evolved as well. From humble, rambling beginnings on Facebook, this has become an on-going epic spanning tens of thousands of words (and I don’t even want to think how many hours). All this writing has improved my overall writing skills, though that has yet to pay off since I still haven’t sold an original story of my own. So really, the only reason I do it is because somehow, somewhere, people out there read and enjoy it too.

And I’d like to know why. See, WordPress shows me a general hit-counter on my posts, but not much more detail than that. I can’t tell if it’s the same people coming over and over again, for instance (and sometimes it is; Jason admits to skimming over past entries to remind himself of plot threads to pick up on) or if it’s just people randomly clicking through. I also don’t know who you, the reader, actually are, and what things–if any–might be encouraging you to stick around.

To that end, I have created a short SurveyMonkey survey with some general questions I’m curious about, and which I hope will help paint a clearer image of who you are on the other side of the screen. If you take a couple minutes to fill it out I would really appreciate it!

Jason: “When we last left off, these three had just joined a cult up in Humboldt, so I think we’ll start with Kara back at the Chantry.”
Kara: “So Anstis went up there too?”
Jason: “Yes. Anstis was remanded to the custody of these two, pending investigations into whether he did or did not murder Dr. von Natsi, along with, I think it was…eighteen other people? In Fort Funston and it’s immediate environs? After somebody decided to go completely nuts?”
Jim: “Well, it certainly wasn’t me!”
Jason: “You see, now that Tom is on ice, somebody else has to make all the stupid decisions.”
Chris: “You’re the Tom now.”
Jim: “Goddamit!”

Jason: “You feel…enraptured. You feel…the love of God.”
Me: “Oh god. Ew.”
Jason: “I love your propensity to botch the really big rolls.”
Jim: “I have rolled more 1’s tonight than any other night, I swear–”
Chris: “I’m gonna be amused if you come back to the car a Mormon missionary.”

Cutscene: Through the Looking Glass

The following is a brief scene role-played out by Chris and myself on our own initiative, which we recorded, shared with Jason, and had retconned into the overall timeline. Because apparently this is something we are doing now.

***

Preparations for the Humboldt trip move quickly. With Rhona’s help, Rabenholz secures a Learjet to take everyone from San Carlos airport up to Eureka. Rabenholz estimates they can all be upstate within two hours.

But first, he has an errand.

He sends Anstis and Scout down the Peninsula and has a separate car take him by the Chantry. Georgia is still at the Tower, but he “convinces” Bob to let him in. Once inside, he brushes his way past the confused ghoul and heads down to the basement, to the room Tom’s body is secured in.

Rabenholz has supervised some rearranging here over the past few nights. Aquilifer’s broken rack is still shoved up against one wall, but the metal rack–and the body bolted to it–is missing. In its place stand two large framed mirrors, leaning against the pitted rock wall. Rabenholz approaches the smaller of the two and reaches out a hand to touch the glass.

The light wavers, and suddenly he is…somewhere else.

Jason: “Kara, let me see your sheet….”
Jim: “…Are you giving her a free dot of Investigation!?”
Jason: “Yuuup.”
Jim: “How!?”
Kara: “Because Georgia extracted Science from Malkavian-ness!”

8/13/15 Addendum

So I just began working on the 8/20 episode and realized the beginning of that episode is really the end of the previous one, since we did a short scene with Anstis and then had a time-jump of three days. Thus I went back and added the Anstis scene to the end of 8/13 and will begin 8/20 after the jump. So if you already read 8/13, please go back and check it out. I’ll also post a reminder at the start of 8/20 for a little while until everyone figures it out.

Sorry about the confusion. Much like my new teacher lesson-planning, I’m working organically here.

Which is just a fancy way of spinning the fact that I’m making this all up as I go along.

The Vampires of ISIS: Archer Characters as V:tM Clans

Some months ago, friend-of-the-game Seth made an offhand comment here on the blog identifying the main characters of Archer as various Vampire clans. You know, as one does. Many of his points were so spot-on that over time they have sort of evolved into head-canon in my mind and others. I decided to elaborate on this brilliance in an effort to spread the meme.

And it also gave me a great excuse to go trolling for Archer gifs.

Jason: *coming back from a secret scene with me* “Alright, so, Jim dies spontaneously, for no reason he can ever discern.”
Jim: “Son of a bitch. Fine, rolling a new character.”
Jason: “You are now Slayer! Oh, wait….”
Everyone: “Awwww….”
Kara: “He lives on inside Georgia!”
Jason: “No. He doesn’t.”
Jim: “Just like everyone else.”
Jason: “It’s okay, everyone Georgia touches turns to dead.”

2015 DragonCon Report

Dragoncon_badgeAs you’ve probably seen, this year has been filled with a lot of off-weeks as each of our schedules mis-align for different events. In early September, though, we missed a week because we were all aligned for something else entirely.

DragonCon.

Jim and Kara have been regular attendees at this most massive of nerd conventions for years now. Last year, they brought Chris and I along with them. This year, the combined influence of all four of us was enough to drag Jason along as well. Adventures and revelry were had by all, but here I’d like to share a few highlights of special relevance to the game.

Jason: “Dr. von Natsi is stringing all manner of hellacious-looking equipment all over your Chantry and setting it up to infuse the wards with additional power. Wouldn’t it be such a terrible pity if something were to go wrong with that process?”
Kara: “Georgia is helping him!”
Jason: “…”
Me: “Yeah, Georgia has no context for being fearful of Dr. von Natsi cause the last time she participated in Science she got Celerity.”
Jason: “Well no, the first time she participated in Science she got Celerity. Other times after that have had other effects.”
Me: “That’s true, she did go to Pluto….”
Kara: “But that didn’t work out too badly for her!”
Jim: “It was interesting!”
Kara: “She rescued Jawahar!”
Me: “…And she got a cat, so yeah, I guess that’s true. Damn it feels good to be a Georgia.”
